Some useful commands:
This check current IDE power mode status of the disk:
– unknown (drive does not support this command),
– active\/idle (normal operation),
– standby (low power mode, drive has spun down),
– sleeping (lowest power mode, drive is completely shut down)
The operators: -S, -y, -Y, -Z can be used to manipulate the IDE power modes<\/p>\n
hdparm -C \/dev\/sda<\/pre>\nForce an IDE drive to immediately enter the low power consumption STANDBY mode, usually causing it to spin down:<\/p>\n
hdparm -y \/dev\/sda<\/pre>\nForce\u00a0 an\u00a0 IDE\u00a0 drive to immediately enter the lowest power consumption sleep mode, causing it to shut down completely. A hard or soft reset is required before the drive can be accessed again:<\/p>\n
hdparm -Y \/dev\/sda<\/pre>\nPut the drive into idle\u00a0 (low-power)\u00a0 mode,\u00a0 and\u00a0 also\u00a0 set\u00a0 the standby (spindown) timeout for the drive.\u00a0 This timeout value is used by the drive to determine how long to wait\u00a0 (with\u00a0 no\u00a0 disk activity)\u00a0 before\u00a0 turning\u00a0 off the spindle motor to save power:<\/p>\n
hdparm -S \/dev\/sda<\/pre>\nDisable\u00a0 the\u00a0 automatic power-saving function of certain Seagate drives (ST3xxx models?), to prevent them\u00a0 from\u00a0 idling\/spinning down at inconvenient times.
An example:<\/p>\nhdparm -y \/dev\/sdd\n\/dev\/sdd\n issuing standby command\nhdparm -C \/dev\/sdd\n\/dev\/sdd\n drive state is: standby<\/pre>\n\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n
And this is the READ test of the disk:<\/p>\n\n\n\n
